Do you hear what I hear? : The Sound Sex Project

Recently Mark Harris, a local musician in the band On Bodies and a Concordia University Media Studies MA candidate, sent me an e-mail giving me a heads up about a new project he's been putting together entitled the Sound Sex Project. Here's what he has to say about it:

Music becomes imbued with meaning through the myriad of ways that we use sound and song in our daily lives.

The Sound Sex Project seeks to explore how sound articulates desire, and how people use music to orchestrate their sexual encounters.

I began thinking about the links between sound, music, sex and arousal in an attempt to write about audio in pornography. My critique of the porn soundtracks was that sound quality seemed to be of less concern than image, that the noises of bodies and voices were often muted, and that pornographic scores were often cheesy, bland and repetitive.

Yet, in reading theorist Tia DeNora, whose work has informed this project, I was faced with my own arrogance. Who was I to deem what kind of music might or might not instigate sexual activity? Everyone uses music and sound in a different way.

This is where the Sound Sex Project needs your help. I would love any varying degree of participation, but my basic request is:

-Please send me the name of an audio track and artist which you have played during a sexual encounter. If you have an mp3 file of the sound/song, e-mail that as well. Please send your submission to:

soundsexproject@gmail.com

I will post all submissions chronologically on my blog, so please indicate if you would like your name to be used, if you would like to use a pseudonym, or if you would rather remain anonymous.

My aim is to compile a Sound Sex Project mix CD for everyone who participates. After the first compilation has been completed, feel free to submit to the project again.

I would love to post additional information about your song choice. If you are willing to share more than just the sound selection, other information you might include could be:

-your biographical info
-how your musical choice affected your sexual encounter
-what type of technology you used to play your soundtrack
-why you chose that particular work
-any other thoughts or reflections

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to hearing from you. Once again, please send all entries to:

soundsexproject@gmail.com

Lickety Split 3 is born- alive and well!

The party is over, but fresh in my heart and in my my face (undereye circles, breakouts...)
The Goods was amazing, and the Heavyweight collective who were also celebrating their 8th anniversary that night (live) painted this amazing likeness of Prince- who is total sex + a guitar! Lickety Split cookies were served, and zines were stamped. Lots of people came out just to pick up a copy of the zine and go! The afterparty at Red Bird Gallery and Studios was alive for me with crazy dance beats by DJs Backdoor and Julie D, among others. I got tipsy, had fresh conversations about porn + feminism, and danced my ass off until the cops came by around 6 or 7 in the morning on a noise complaint with, like, 15 coppers and 4 cop cars and 2 vans. My friend Giddy got a ticket for resisting the evacuation and so much chaos...but motherfuckin fun!!!
Thanks to all who came out, and big thanks to Key Kode for stapling 300 zines all day Saturday and striking the Lickety Split table at The Goods while I whirled away to Red Bird.
Lickety Split #3 should be available at Monastiraki (5478 St. Laurent) and I will be mailing off copies to Toronto and Ottawa soon as well as biking all over Montreal on Friday to get this issue ditroed while she's still in heat. I will post a list of locations once they're out. Also look out for #3 on the site indyish.com soon.

*******

Along with all this excitement, the monthly sex-related radio show AUDIO SMUT that I co-host aired last night. It's a fun new show that airs in Montreal on CKUT 90.3 FM Radio McGill, which is an amazing community radio station with a diverse schedule. I am so gald to be becoming a part of this community and to be working so steadily with my two co-hosts, Sara and Stephanie!!!
The show airs the first Wednesday of every month during the regularly scheduled Hersay hour, from 6-7pm, which also airs three other right one, women-focused shows: Owl (Older Women Live), Spitfyre (women of colour), and a show for Mum's whose title escapes me right now...I'll post it later. AUDIO SMUT has a monthly theme and yesterday's was 'sex + marriage'called "Going down on the aisle". If you missed it check out the advanced archives here. Just type in the date (May 3rd) and time (from 18:00 to 19:00, or 19:05 to make sure...).

Next month's show is called "A first time for everything", and will air June 7th, from 6-7pm. Tell your friends!!!

AUDIOSMUT on CKUT!

Check it out! I'm the new co-host on the CKUT sex radio show AUDIOSMUT! The two other women who I am now in dirty partnership with are Sara and Stephanie. Together we kick out this monthly radio show, the first wednesday of every month from 6-7pm during the regularly scheduled Hersay hour!
So that means we're on air tomorrow, check out 90.3FM at 6pm or go online to visit CKUT to check out RSS feeds and archives.

Some of you may remember that I was intially interviewed on AUDIOSMUT about a month ago or so and now I'm moving up, baby. Since it's a monthly gig, we have been focussing our energies on crafting theme-based shows for the next 6 months, with titles like 'Going down on the aisle' and 'First Time for Everything'. Look out for flyers here and everywhere advertising these future shows!

Tomorrow's show will be a grab bag of music and short interviews and current affairs stuff as we will be focusing our energy on fundraising for the CKUT Annual Funding Drive. As you may remember, CKUT had a recent brush with radio death when McGill University initiated a referendum to see whether their student population wanted to continue to financially support the station. Thankfully people voted in favour of supporting the station. Here's more about the Funding Drive:

CKUT's 17th Annual Funding Drive - LiveWire
March 30 to April 9, 2006 - 30 mars au 9 avril, 2006

As CKUT steps into its 18th year on the frequency dial, many have come to call these walls home. CKUT has opened its doors to everyone, creating connections in every nook and cranny on the grand isle of Montreal. Individuals and organizations of the like have used CKUT as a stepping stone when no other avenue was open to them. Giving the support and encouragement that every person needs to flourish, CKUT has many success stories accredited to it.

With this success we honour those who have laid the groundwork and made CKUT who it is today. It is a lifeforce like no other-giving birth to new connections, allowing people of different walks of life to come together. As with most family units, ideas can sometimes collide, resulting into an atonal sound. However, when the brainwaves do connect a glorious sound can be heard from the top of the hill. The walls that hold up CKUT are as colourful as its history, leading listeners and its kin into another exhilarating 18 years.

Pledge online with the 2006 Funding Drive Secure Online Form or call 514.398.8991 to make your pledge over the phone.
