Launch Party Antics #5: Meet NICK CABELLI

Yessss!! So this is the FIFTH in a series of band and launch collaborator introductions here on the blog. Please get to know these folks so that you may responsibly take part in some consensual party-ness on Nov. 21st.

Our DJ for the evening is one Nick Cabelli, who you may recognize from this blog or his own or from a certain local record shop or from the zine itself, or, or ,or...

Man of the "oddcasts". Check out the archive of "oddcasts" here.

Be sure to try on one of the boob robots at the launch party! Thanks Nick!

no oddcast, no sellout

Q: Gee, Nick, whatever happened to the oddcasts?

A: I’ve had a sort of technological meltdown, at home... basically my roommate’s mac is no longer around, and it really hard to do ANYthing on a pc, never mind edit mp3s and upload large files to Lickety Split’s off-shore servers... I was using a lot of found sounds in the oddcasts of late, and those were all downloaded from various sources... wikipedia, strange plain html websites... its still a big place out there, full of great stuff... I don’t even have the internet at home. I’m stealing some from the neighbourhood... maybe the library around the corner. I feel like—wham!—I’m a technological refugee. I’ve grabbed my files and split, but the infrastructure is gone, it’s left behind and it’s only forward now.

Q: what? Technological refugee? That’s a little extreem...

A: That’s how it feels. I like it though. I’m close to a facebook suicide and i remember to call my friends more often, i use the phone a little more than i was. But seriously: the amount of time i spent on the computer has suddenly been dropped into my lap, and so i have the same urges and impulses and interests, all of which need COMPUTING, so to speak... but i don’t have the right tools to accomplish the things i used to do, and its liberating and scary too.

Q: How is it scary?

A: Well, the oddcasts, that’s a good example. It was a thing i enjoyed doing, and it served multiple purposes, it kept me plugged into things, it hyped l/s, it amused some people, perhaps... it was really fulfilling, to make a mess of things, to make a joke of content, to mock the guest-star. It wasn’t ironic, it was playful, really hilarious sometimes. To me, at least. I would say without a doubt i was the biggest fan of the oddcasts, which is how it should be.

So its a little scary when all of a sudden i’m unable to articulate this stuff, this tension i have with music... when the will and interest is still there but i can’t complete because of some fucking computer? What if the lights go out, what could i still enjoy in the dark?

Q: You sound a little mad.

A: I’m just surprised... disappointed, i guess, to have allowed myself to so heavily rely on the computer as the tool of expression, and communication. Not ‘a’ tool, THE tool. And not “the” computer, the APPLE. Now, without it, i’m like a cave-man, stumbling around, trying to steal internet signals and hoping they last. No photoshop, no qwark, no audacity... no oddcasts, no cover art... the pc is still great for wordprocessing and surfing but as a machine of magnifying creative imputs it’s lame, lame, lame.

Q: How is it liberating?
A: Well, its made me look for other ways of getting things done, less brand-specific or technologically exclusive. Like the shadow puppets, its just card-board and a digital camera, and $0.49 and BAM an hour later i have prints. I was passing around samples of shadowpuppet porn at my house and my good friend smash commented on how its been since he’s held a photograph... they’re kinda heavy, sticky, they smell like something. Its fun to re-connect with things.

Q: So how are you going to go on with the oddcasts? Or are you?

A: Yeah, i want to keep doing them. I have some unfinished mixes which i’ll use to get through the launch hype, and i bet i could even re-release some of the early ones which no one listened to.

Q: does that bother you, that you’re not heralded?

A: not really. I make them for myself, really, and i brand them so obtusely that i can see how people will have a hard time finding an access-point, a point of entry. Instead everything is weird and perhaps, meaningless to them and so CLICK, NEXT... this is the internet, buddy... there’s no room for slowpokes here. Either you grab someone’s attention or you don’t, and you’ve got a better chance to do that if they’re sympathetic to you, if they want to be like you or think you want to be like them, that’s even better. but the oddcast is so purely ME, so about me that i can’t make that extention, that plea of similarity and familiarness or even friendliness... the oddcast is very alienating, very lonely, almost haunted... i couldn’t expect everyone to get into that. Even my close friends don’t listen to it.

Q: Um, isn’t it supposed to hype our fine smut zine? Is it at all related to smut?

A: no, i guess not. But it is a very personal project, and ambs has defended it as being “passionate, and that’s all that matters,” which is very kind of her. Really, i could have been making a 4/4 dance-mix every week and would that be Sexier, or Smutier? Well, maybe... people at night clubs like to fuck... i guess the oddcast is far more emotional than a dance mix, even when i did a dance mix, there was a big backstory about ODing at a nightclub and dying on the way to the hospital while dancing on the inside, dancing to death... all very melancholy and unspoken, sonically hinted at but not really crucial to enjoying the music. The oddcasts are like little sounds tracks—even maybe the incidental music and sometimes the dialogue—of little movies, generally silent films, i guess... dialogueless films... in that regard, they ape the cinematicaness of the zine, no neccesarily on purpose, but as a result of like-minds congregating. So they’re not smut, per se, but i don’t think for a second they’re out of place here. i don’t know where else i would be able to find something like this. I guess that’s why i made ‘em.

Q: so, are you going to continue?

A: oh, yes, yes of course. There is a little man inside of me who needs to make oddcasts. Getting over the technical challenges i’m presently facing is part of the fun, i guess. I need to find an old mixer board, i have a new set of tools... the first series of oddcasts were all done in the lab, except for three done live with no overdubs. Live is a different beast, and i’d like to get into that more. I took the show on the road to casa for a few nights with interesting results, and i think i have a recording of one of those. But really, i’d like to turn my library at home into a sound lab, where i have the cable TV signal and a phonograph player and a cassette deck and maybe the shortwave radio all plugged into a minidisk. And then we can listen to bill clinton speaking over suicide tracks and all be healed. Again.

two-dimentional pop songs are static and inaccessible. they are "other" places, a storyland which holds our attention, through a narrative or emotional hook or something. lyrics contextualize the pop-song. it is like a press-release, a prepared statement, complete and truly intended by the pop artist; instructions on how to read the song, where it comes and who it's for.

the pop song on this side, for instance, suggests that if it were not for sly, the unintelligible but certainly celebrational grunting and moaning would not be taking place. the "sexy" noises, what one smarmy critic called "the panting noises of a woman with a broken leg trying to finish the last half of a marathon," are integral to the reading of the song: sly's funk music is so sexy the only way they can vamp it any higher is by outright aural carnal injection.

at the same time, however, it illustrates the difference between sly—multi platinum superstar—and swamp dogg—obscene mid-level soul sensation, specifically in terms of just how sexy music can be. swamp dogg, for better or worse, injects sexual female grunts as an additional instrument into the mix, which is then like a layer of pornography through which any reading of the song must penetrate.

this song is the nexus and inspiration for this side.

it is followed by a mysterious "song" comprised of excited bongos, another excited female voice, and what are apparently bedsprings, each rising in intensity over a five minute span. this is overlayed over takushi yamazaki's spacemachine project, from a piece which germinates meanderingly for 21 minutes. this is like a joke, like two lovers who are not on the same wave length. or one lover who is not paying attention. there are moans and rhythm but there is also a wandering somethingelse. perhaps sex is very cosmic after all.

it is bookended by two songs from fushitsusha and neu! (which i pronounce "noy," but you make tackle as you see fit) which i find immensely sensual. in contrast to the swam dogg song, where an aggreable interpretation would be: "yeah, it would be good to be sexin' right now," the longer, instrumental songs offer no indication of how they are meant to be received. as a result their interpretation can be guided and influenced. or at least, that was to be the experiment.

the fushitsusha track represents flirting, and horniness and vexation, leather jackets and night clubs. this piece in particular i find very accessible, simple rock and rock, like 35 wordless white stripes songs in 10minutes. rock and roll is sexy, right? black leather and sunglasses and all that?

the neu! song has a strange excited sameness to it. like the bongo-space-sex medley preceding it, it offers both the motion of rhythm and the texture of the silky guitar twiddles. i guess its a little like cuddling, but far more dynamic. maybe like dolphins.

both songs were to be completely over-dubbed with "sexy noises." to be realized fully, the project requires a more significant variety of "sexy noises" then can be procured presently, and so is presented incomplete.

listening to excited heartbeats can raise your own heart rate. as a counter measure a sick, irregular heartbeat was added throughout the side.

sometimes it makes me dizzy

next week! we found no.4 side B! the oddcast homage to popmtl! sure, pop was almost five months ago. but its mercantile spirit remains always.

There is still cigarette smoke in the air. Random and secret cosmic messages from your 11-dimensional lover. Or the dial just spins wildly, cycling through all known frequencies until you’re rested. The fibers of existence connect us electrically always. A dream uncluttered and calm: a white plastic patio table and her grey eyes staring outside, past the sink, into the yard and she smiles as she sips some tap water, flotsam gently whirling around the glass.

Lickety Spliting Headache

When you wake up it is already dark and the world has a druggy bounce to it. Was it dark when you went to bed as well? You do not recall. Outside two men are smashing apart a small coffee table with big rubber mallets in the street, and the shows on TV don’t match those advertised in the guide. You’re happy to indulge yourself some more. You’re not even wearing socks.
In the darkness of the street only the traffic lights seems vivid and harsh. Everything else is flat. The people who pass are novelties, different animated characters in department store windows. Look at how their legs kick, so lifelike!
It is perhaps seven hours into your day before you speak aloud, and when you do no one is there to hear it. It is still exciting to do bad things in public places, and so you go out to do just that. But you’re only a rebel for a moment; and for most of the time you’re still dull ole regular you. Walking back home, you party alone until you are dizzy and go back to sleep. It is still dark. Or is it dark again?
Your lifestyle has made you very open-minded: everything bores you.

T.B SHEETS
i was playing this in the office the other day and of the new kid was all like "ahhh yess... t.b sheets,.. a clASSic!" and i stopped and stared at him with this pathetic expression on my face because he'd just casually labeled one of the most emotional songs in my life like he was naming bugs by their latin names. such detached appreciation. good god. everytime i listen to this song my girlfriend dies of tuberculousys and a little part of me crumbles to his knees. everytime.

PAT GARRETT
i like weird spacey noises and this is a damn good slab of that stuff. the magik markers came into the record store i work at to sell us their album and i put it on immediately while they wandered around for like 45 minutes which was really kinda weird now that i think about it

WE WILL BOMB YOU
i love the bassline in this song. plus i find it funny that you can play two modern oddpop bands on top of eachother and noone can really tell where one ends and the other begins.

WHO BY FIRE
i was walking down st. laurent street and a buncha people waiting for the bus all back away from some guy in a trenchcoat who i naturally look at and he looks so familiar that excitedly i blurt "holy shit it's mr. spock" to the giggles of everyone and he smirks and walks away and it was only a few blocks later that i realized it was leonard cohen and i was an idiot. meanwhile this song is so poignant it's probably what dying sounds like.

A DAY IN THE LIFE/ WEIRD FOLK STORY BY IKE REIKO
i like the idea of an alternate universe where the beatles live in japan all bloated and jam in pachinko parlours seven times a day, really just kinda joshing around and having fun, like the hamburg days, but in crazy old japan

LET IT WIN
more clipd beaks. i like songs that feel like places, and this is a good one. perhaps running out of gas in the mountains somewhere. thought the simmering guitar stuff underneath makes me believe its more like hard drugs and cruel war and alice in chains vigils

SLEEPWALK/ BAD CRAZINESS IN PALM BEACH (exert)
this is the point of the oddcast: synergy, that magic unpredictability of the assemblage of stuff

so h.r. was having a big dance party blow-out on the main and all the warm guns were there with the lithe young things, twisting and grooving to the four-dollar snaps of cool beer; to the last muggy day of august the impenetrable yellow haze above darkened and heavy with moisture, long lost in the barometric frame work and she asked me to spin a little for some b-day goodvibes but clarky and twiggy aren't the sharing types and kick it up from staid old weezer right into the danceparty mere moments before my set in a taunt, a tease, a test or a throw down but for me it's no problem: i'm not the best but i'm the best in the room and rightaway it's kompact and cult chants and the idle shoulder dip explodes into the foot stomping hand clapping celebration of the church universal and triumphant incorporated maaaan i mean these main street cats will dance to anything but i'm rusty with the public and i dont know how to respond to requests for the arcade fire and h.r's sister is all up in my face in her toothpaste persona sqwaking about spinning already and the blood of a friend is the last person i'm going to tell where to smoke it, while clarky stares at his shoes and wonders what to do and where to go when you got the moves but you ain't got no soul but i'm no goldenhawk i don't need any extra saturday night friction so i pack it up and bike home forever in the rainstorm double soaked from sweat and sky and humming and smiling lost in a vision of my 11-dimensional self: gray eye permasmile and the hot fuzzy burning of giddy lips unleashed

lickety split oddcast no. 0

Recorded music is static. It is recorded and there it is, as it is. And how it always will be.

It is completely insulated. And though we can reach at it, we will never penetrate into that terrifyingly perfect world of the song.

This is why some people are vinyl junkies: they’re addicted to the random pops. This way each time is different. This way each time is the only time.

And this is why the oddcast is so busy: it’s an attempt to lift music from the precious and perfect and wholly unattainable, and back into the familiar world of beautiful imperfect uniqueness. Mud on the ponies. Work in those sneakers.

We may all hear these sounds again, but never in the same way. And then again, because the oddcast too is a recording, it will always be the same. With electric music, there is no "live." And that perhaps is the point most easy to recognize and most difficult to articulate.

So investigate these tunes like real-world sensations: appearing suddenly, surprisingly, unexplained: unexplainable: sometimes obvious and sometimes murky but always thick and heavy with the lusty deep breathing of a thing alive. If only for a moment.
