LICKETY SPLIT IN YOUR EARS

you should totally download side b
hot! and annotated!

T.B SHEETS
i was playing this in the office the other day and of the new kid was all like "ahhh yess... t.b sheets,.. a clASSic!" and i stopped and stared at him with this pathetic expression on my face because he'd just casually labeled one of the most emotional songs in my life like he was naming bugs by their latin names. such detached appreciation. good god. everytime i listen to this song my girlfriend dies of tuberculousys and a little part of me crumbles to his knees. everytime.

PAT GARRETT
i like weird spacey noises and this is a damn good slab of that stuff. the magik markers came into the record store i work at to sell us their album and i put it on immediately while they wandered around for like 45 minutes which was really kinda weird now that i think about it

WE WILL BOMB YOU
i love the bassline in this song. plus i find it funny that you can play two modern oddpop bands on top of eachother and noone can really tell where one ends and the other begins.

WHO BY FIRE
i was walking down st. laurent street and a buncha people waiting for the bus all back away from some guy in a trenchcoat who i naturally look at and he looks so familiar that excitedly i blurt "holy shit it's mr. spock" to the giggles of everyone and he smirks and walks away and it was only a few blocks later that i realized it was leonard cohen and i was an idiot. meanwhile this song is so poignant it's probably what dying sounds like.

A DAY IN THE LIFE/ WEIRD FOLK STORY BY IKE REIKO
i like the idea of an alternate universe where the beatles live in japan all bloated and jam in pachinko parlours seven times a day, really just kinda joshing around and having fun, like the hamburg days, but in crazy old japan

LET IT WIN
more clipd beaks. i like songs that feel like places, and this is a good one. perhaps running out of gas in the mountains somewhere. thought the simmering guitar stuff underneath makes me believe its more like hard drugs and cruel war and alice in chains vigils

SLEEPWALK/ BAD CRAZINESS IN PALM BEACH (exert)
this is the point of the oddcast: synergy, that magic unpredictability of the assemblage of stuff

Support for Astria Suparak and The Warehouse Gallery

Astria Suparak is an awesome artist and curator who invited out our video program Daughters of Joy! down to NY state a few weeks ago. The work she has done over the last year as Director of the Warehouse Gallery in Syracuse, NY has been inspiring, contemporary and emerging artist driven. This week, we
have learned that Astria is being fired from her position. The
Syracuse arts community is stunned by this: faculty at Syracuse
University, local arts organizations, and artists in the area have
been thrilled by the great programs Astria has organized in her short
tenure at the Gallery, and feel she has contributed much to the city.
Astria is very professional in all her undertakings.
She has made strong connections in this community, and fostered great
dialogue. The only reasons we have been given for this decision, made
by Jeffrey Hoone, is that he is restructuring the Gallery to meet his
high standards. We do not know what these standards are, and feel
that The Warehouse Gallery has been very successful in bringing
important contemporary art to central New York.

If you feel comfortable in doing so, we ask you to write a letter to
the people listed below. As a member of a larger art community,
showing support for Astria and her fine work will help us to improve
arts programming in Syracuse, as well as allow Astria to continue to
contribute her talents to the art world at large. Below is an email
that is being circulated to as many people as possible. Please feel
free to send it to anyone you feel should know about this, or would
be willing to help.

You can see some of the letters that have
already been written on her behalf at http://syracuse-warehouse.blogspot.com/
-----------------
Dear All,

This past last week, I have learned that an exhibition of the social
activist artists The Yes Men, scheduled to open in November at The
Warehouse Gallery in downtown Syracuse, has been canceled by upper
management. When I inquired about the reasons for this decision, I
learned that CMAC (Coalition of Museums and Art Centers at Syracuse
University) is planning personnel changes at The Warehouse Gallery,
and canceled this show because of the anticipated lack of continuity
in the staff.

What is most alarming about this is that it appears that Astria
Suparak, the current Director of the Gallery, is being forced out. If
you feel that the work that Astria has done is valuable, please take
the time now to let others know.

I am writing to urge you to show your support now for Astria and the
programs she has organized at The Warehouse Gallery (including Come
On: Desire Under The Female Gaze, Faux Naturel, Embracing Winter, and
Networked Nature, along with various screenings and events around
town). You can do so in a number of ways:

1) write a letter to the following people:

Jeffrey Hoone, Executive Director, CMAC, jjhoone@syr.edu

Nancy Cantor, Chancellor, ncantor@syr.edu

Eric Spina, Vice Chancellor/Provost, efspina@syr.edu

Carole Brzozowski, Dean of CVPA, Brzoz@syr.edu

Please write of any personal experience you have had, either in
working with Astria, attending exhibitions and events at The
Warehouse Gallery, and/or your thoughts on its programming thus far.

Some points you could make ( I offer these only as a things to think
about):

- The Warehouse Gallery is needed space for contemporary art. The
exhibitions it has offered have been important. This is due in a
large part because of the work of its current staff.

- The programming at the Warehouse Gallery has the support of people
on campus, and in the local as well as national/international arts
community. Astria has made strong connections with different
departments on campus, with local arts groups, and with national/
international artists.

- Astria Suparak is a young curator worth supporting. She has shown
her abilities to put together intelligent exhibitions of artistic and
social importance. See http://www.thewarehousegallery.org for details.

- The Warehouse Gallery has been a significant contributor to the
"cultural capital" of Syracuse, something that both the city and
University claim as being valued.

- It is important that CMAC, and its Executive Director Jeffrey
Hoone, as a powerful cultural entity, be responsive to those who care
about the arts and be transparent about decisions.

2) Write a letter to the Editor to the following papers (include your
address and daytime phone number):

--The Post-Standard letters@syracuse.com. In the "subject box,"
please type "Post-Standard letter."
The Readers' Page, Box 4915, Syracuse 13221.
Fax : 470-3081.

--The New Times: editorial@syracusenewtimes.com
Syracuse New Times Letters, 1415 W. Genesee St., Syracuse 13204
fax: 422-1721

--The Daily Orange: letters@dailyorange.com
The Daily Orange Corp.
744 Ostrom Ave.
Syracuse, NY 13210
(315) 443-2314

3) Attend the opening reception this Thursday at the Warehouse
Gallery, from 5-8 pm, to show your support. Refreshments provided.

4) Pass this email on to anyone you think would be interested in
issues concerning the growth and appreciation of dynamic,
contemporary art in Upstate New York.

Would you like a little Spanish Fly with your Kinsey? “A Cartoon Guide to the Kinsey Report.”

When famed father of “sexology” Alfred Kinsey released his bestsellers “Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male” in ‘48 & “Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female” in ‘53 who knew his revolutionary saucy statistical studies would fly off the shelves like aphrodisiacs & put the populace in a panic?

He was the subject of a self-titled Oscar-nominated movie in 2004, & underground film luminary Kenneth Anger said he would’ve made the best American president. But decades before all this post-mortem hubbub, cartoon editor Charles Preston gathered together a motley slew of mostly unremarkable gag cartoonists to fill up this quickie mainstream 1954 paperback response to the entomologist-turned-biologist’s controversial findings. And as the book’s intro implies, he tried to lighten the load; “if you’re a man are you interested in women? If you’re a woman are you interested in men? Do you wish that just for once someone wouldn’t take the whole business so seriously?” Yeah but why couldn’t it have been someone with an actual sense of humour? Chapters are divvied up with various Kinsey quotes as headers.

We get cartoons of little girls gleefully tarting themselves up slopped with lipstick & makeup cuz Kinsey’s findings determined “sex life in the human female begins at five.” HA, HA.

We get predictable deadpan caricatures of uptight prigs lamenting the collapse of society as we know it cuz of Kinsey’s dialogs. HO, HO.

And the inevitable overabundance of average-Americans turned sex-crazed after just a whiff of Kinsey, but with barely a bare bottom to be seen throughout all its 128 pages.

Preston chose to close his collection with a rather maudlin, borderline reactionary two-pager showing a conservatively illustrated fully-clothed romantic couple hugging under a full moon with the caption “the world BEFORE the Kinsey Report” & the second picture identical to the first; “the world AFTER the Kinsey Report.” Way to predict, Nostradamus.

But my favourite has to be the cartoon depicting one hubby’s extreme allergic reaction if only for its mind-boggling brutality (pictured below). Retroactive payback is the answer to Kinsey’s report that “nearly 50% of women married by the age of 25 have had pre-marital sexual experiences”! Ouch. The growing pains of a burgeoning sexual revolution. A picture sure tells a thousand words.

Back to School Burlesque: A School Girl's Delight!

So, although I had mixed feelings about returning to the monotony/regularity/self-imposed guilt of school this last week, my desire for a good dose of “back to school burlesque” has never been stronger and I gladly clicked my heels down to Salon Officiel Thursday night to ogle what promised to be a feast for both eyes and spirit. Accompanied by the lovely Miss Lollipop, I lounged on red velvet seats and downed several surprisingly strong G&T’s, all the while eagerly anticipating my first glimpse of wayward flesh. You see, it was none other than the sexily sumptuous Miss Sugarpuss and Seska we awaited and as these ladies slowly maneuvered their way through the hefty crowd I could tell we were in for a treat.

Beginning with a comical number in which the ladies erkel-walked around the dime-sized stage to the sounds of the Beastie Boys’ “Girls,” it was laughter -- so intense you start to hiccup -- inducing Lucy Fur that stole the show. At one point her fake teeth actually flew onto my table, something I was later told had occurred because they were interfering with the feverish cunnilingus she was performing on her spread-eagled fingers.

Other highlights included Miss Sugarpuss’s lesbian school marm routine and the hot and horny little stage kitten’s continual teasing of the crowd. Dressed as a Britney-style school girl only with a lot more class—if one can imagine such a thing⎯she used a long wooden ruler and shiny red apple as her tools of titillation for most of the night. Finally, this little piece of jailbait ended the show with an impromtu chair dance which left everyone creaming for more.

Oh, and let’s not forget Seska’s frumpy school girl gone bad routine which was not only a pleasure to watch but also delivered an juicy tidbit of insider info. You see, much to everyone’s dismay (cough, cough) Seska lost a pastie during this particular performance and while she maintained the perfect twirl of her right tassle I later learned the possible cause of such a mishap. It seems an important part of preparing for a rip-roaring shimmy not only depends on the strength of your spirit gum but also on the pre-show prayer: May the clothes come off and the pasties stay on!

Be sure to catch Seska , Miss Sugarpuss and guests in the Sweet Dream Soiree this Saturday, September 15 at MainLine Theatre. Described to me by Miss Lollipop as a naughty musical in which “instead of breaking out into song the characters break out into burlesque,” it promises to be the heathen’s version of heaven sent.

Nostalgia Dept: Neighbours Against Porno

I was rummaging thru some old files & came across this 80's handout from Montreal's Parc Ave area near where I used to live. "Pornography makes sex dirty & ugly," it screams. Would you want it any other way? I wonder if this is the same group that got the Cinema L'Amour (on St-Laurent & Duluth) to finally take down the pair of cartoon spread legs that used to make up the "L" in their name on their XXX marquee? Around that period, anti-porn hysteria had reached a fever pitch in Montreal (in tandem w/most North American hubs) & I do remember exposés on TV about newly instated laws for the mandatory removal of "offensive" signs outside strip clubs & smut movie theatres. I blocked out the residential address on the handbill but they seemed to have been located around the Plateau. Who were they? And where are they now? Do they walk among us? "Getting rid of pornography takes time & money" it says, "if you have either, or both, send cheque or money order to..." Gee, don't we even get a "pretty please" with that? I'd love to know how much they raked in. And wouldn't it be fun to try to pull the same stunt today just to see what the reaction and/or cash-flow (if any) would be as a barometer of current temperaments? "Local residents feel embarrassed walking down the street"! (Note: if the image is too small to read go to this URL where it's posted: http://www.snubdom.com/antiporno.htm)

Fight the good fight!

So, as wrangler of Lickety Split and a worker at a local youth organization, I have decided to take action regarding HIV/AIDS prevention by participating in the annual Ça Marche walk organized by the Farha Foundation! The Farha Foundation has distributed more than $7.1M to AIDS organizations throughout Quebec providing care and services as well as AIDS prevention and education programs. I will be walking on September 16th and have chosen to support Head & Hands' Sense Project with the funds I raise.

Here's why:
In 2005, the Quebec educational reform essentially eliminated sexual education from the required curriculum at a time when the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are alarmingly high among Canadian youth. Last year, Head & Hands launched The Sense Project in order to support high schools with comprehensive sexual education in light of this reform. That's why I've chosen Head & Hands to benefit from my walk!

Sponsor me here, please, and I'll add you to the HF list!

Lickety Split in Syracuse: The Daughters of Joy campaign for world domination continues...

Yeah, Daughters of Joy rocked New York state on Sunday!

The lovely Astria Suparak (shown above, in blue), curator of Syracuse's Warehouse Gallery, had invited Amber to screen DoJ in conjunction with the gallery's latest exhibition, COME ON: Desire Under the Female Gaze.

So Amber, Mike and I loaded into a ginormous white minivan rental and booted it to the US, buoyed along the way by the salty lyrics of the Boss. Our ride caught the attention of a border guard, who delayed us for a few sweaty minutes with a clumsy cat-and-mouse interrogation. Luckily, Mike was able to prove he's a film professor by providing the etymology of "cinema".

When we reached Syracuse, we left our stuff at Astria's loft (which she shares with her partner Brett Kashmere, an experimental filmmaker), grabbed some vegan chili dogs and checked out the exhibition. It was a phallic blast. There were some amazingly hot large-scale drawings of post-pubescent dude-on-dude action, which I totally covet for my bedroom. Stay tuned for Amber's report!

Then it was time to set up the screening, hosted at a perfectly-sized art venue called Spark. Director Frank McCauley was extremely hospitable -- thanks again, Frank!

As someone who doesn't consider herself a "serious" video-maker, it felt really odd to see 50-plus strangers streaming into a room where my stuff (among many other things) would be shown. At the Montreal event, a large portion of the audience had been friends of the artists. In Syracuse, the pieces had to stand on their own feet -- intimidating!

Mike and Brett
Not to mention the diversity of this new crowd -- from first-year frat-types, to mom-ish looking people, to an older man I took for a priest until his jacket came off. I think I let the hype about US conservatism get the best of me, since the crowd was very pleasant and attentive thoughout.
Anyhoo, Amber did a fantastic job revamping the line-up. T
he program as a whole truly seemed to gel this time around, and there were some new and engaging found-footage works. I'm a sucker for comedy, so a new submission by Joanne Balcaen showing screaming female rock fans from the 50s and 60s was one of my favorites.

I was secretly hoping for a repeat of the angry storm-out that took place at the Montreal soirée (complete with a showy return of the individual's ticket), but the most dramatic reaction this time around was a man who got very excited (agitated?) when Janet Jackson's video for If started to play during one of my pieces. It's a rousing song, I'll grant him that.

After the screening, Amber and I did a Q&A with the audience. Amber held the floor with grace and wit, while I shuffled around beside her like a big gangles, periodically trying to escape from the harsh blue spotlight. The audience spoon-fed me a few questions (again, where were the angry Republicans brandishing the Patriot Act?), and then we scampered off to drink fresh strawberry martinis. Jealous? You should be, they were delicious.

Upon return to the loft, we all spent the next few hours foot-pumping an air mattress for me to sleep on and eating luxurious snacks. Astria and Brett really snacked us good.

After a night of endless spider-filled dreams (there was a nest in my underwear drawer -- ewww! and also what???), we hit the road early, stopping off for waffles at the notorious Funk'n'Waffles, where Amber confirmed my belief that she is indeed a giraffe.

All in all, a very enjoyable trip. Thanks to all of our gracious hosts, and Mike for his patience and stamina! (Oops, that came out wrong. I meant driving stamina.)

Tune in to our future adventures, when Amber and Neetzie take DoJ to snobby Toronto...

Titillating Tomes Review #1 -- "Man Rape"

Lately I've been picking up some vintage smut paperbacks, many of which revolve around the narrator's loss of control and power. And at first glance, you can see why I assumed Man Rape would be a pretty sexy read, what with the purposefully provocative title and the frankly baffling octopussy art. Boy, was I wrong!

This "Scandanavian bestseller," written by Märta Tikkanen in 1975, is in fact a furious feminist polemic on marriage, heterosexuality, and power. Yup. Not what I was expecting at all (although I would like to read that book some day!). Along with being a bloody bleak read, it's also a truly bizarre way to start series on panty-creaming publications. Talk about your cold showers. For days after reading it I walked around giving men the stink-eye, and I'm a Women's Studies major - I know from depressing!

Since I don't think this book is in high circulation these days, I'll just give away the entire plot: Eva Randers, a divorced librarian with two sons, is raped (I guess you could call it a date rape) by a male acquaintance. She eventually decides to revenge-rape him and then inform the police, thereby sending a message to the public (men are as vulnerable to rape as women) and to male rapists (watch out!). Eva succeeds in raping the man, but fails to convince the police of her crime despite ample proof; they dismiss her confession and chalk the incident up to kinky sex. To top it off, when Eva gets home her younger son informs her that he's raped his girlfriend and is going to be charged.

So, yeah... Not the most subtle book in a lot of ways, although some of the narrator's observations are pretty shrewd and a lot of this stuff still rings true today, unfortunately. One of Tikkanen's main theses -- that men are vulnerable to sexual violence by women -- is almost as radical a concept today as it was over 30 years ago. Yeesh.

The biggest selling point of this book has to be the scene of Eva's revenge, which was an entirely new experience for me as a reader (I can't even count the number of times I've read the reverse). Tikkanen does a very convincing job of taking us through Eva's psychological trajectory, and by the time I reached the actual event I was pretty agitated and I had to put the book down a few times. A LOT of vitriol is crammed into this passage, which weaves back and forth between the present and Eva's memories of her own sexual assault:

"... has anyone ever had their prick bitten off, and she's siezed with a wild desire to see what would happen... it would be a fine way to repay him for what she had to swallow the last time, she can still remember the taste and how she wanted to spew it out again, choking, smelling of those bushes with their stinking yellow flowers, sperm... he screams."

What more can I say? If you're looking for a fun, sexy romp -- not for you! If you're looking for a brutally honest and graphic description of something you may never have encountered in fiction before... give it a whirl.

Rating:

Tune in next week for another review -- it'll be juicier, I promise!

lickety split oddcast no. 0

Recorded music is static. It is recorded and there it is, as it is. And how it always will be.

It is completely insulated. And though we can reach at it, we will never penetrate into that terrifyingly perfect world of the song.

This is why some people are vinyl junkies: they’re addicted to the random pops. This way each time is different. This way each time is the only time.

And this is why the oddcast is so busy: it’s an attempt to lift music from the precious and perfect and wholly unattainable, and back into the familiar world of beautiful imperfect uniqueness. Mud on the ponies. Work in those sneakers.

We may all hear these sounds again, but never in the same way. And then again, because the oddcast too is a recording, it will always be the same. With electric music, there is no "live." And that perhaps is the point most easy to recognize and most difficult to articulate.

So investigate these tunes like real-world sensations: appearing suddenly, surprisingly, unexplained: unexplainable: sometimes obvious and sometimes murky but always thick and heavy with the lusty deep breathing of a thing alive. If only for a moment.

In the spirit of plugging the current sex ed hole, ACCM is using the power of digital media to disseminate (ha!) information on HIV/AIDs in high schools across Montreal.

Despite the searing heat, twenty people showed up to play and "act". We formed two teams: the righteous white blood cells (those of us in white bandannas) and the evil yet ultimately victorious HIV virus-ers (in plaid bandannas, 'cuz plaid = bad). It was awesome, and I can tell you Amber's one fierce leukocyte!

All this to say two things:

1) The Lickety Ladies will soon be household names... or at least cafeteria names. I know what you're thinking: Finally, a way for Lickety Split to advertise to the under 18 crowd! (That was a joke, CSIS. Don't put us on your watch list.)

2) ACCM is awesome (as is soccer), and HIV/AIDS is a subject you can never know too much about. Check out what this fine organization is up to at http://www.accmontreal.org/

Toodles!

Robinson Devor's ZOO: An informal review

The cover of the Montreal Mirror was invigorating for LS's Kathleen, after having seen ZOO at the Fantasia festival.
The following is the lightly edited transcription of an instant message conversation between Kathleen and Amber about the film ZOO which they had recently watched at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal.
Amber: Kathleen?
Kathleen: Hi
Amber: So. Zoo, eh?
Kathleen: I feel a bit let down by zoo. you?
As a representative of the horse community, i mean.
kidding!
Amber: Feelings...yes. Well, I feel a bit muddled.
There were a lot of pretty sky + tree shots.
Kathleen: There were some Hallmark-esque shots of lilacs and leaping dolphins...
Amber: There were also references to a small mining town and this zoophilia community meeting at a farm after having met via the (evil?) internet.
Kathleen: Hey, we're using the evil internet! Will we end up in Washington State...?
Amber: ...what?
Oh!
Like in THE FILM!
I thought you meant The President or somethin'
I love my cats, but I don't LOVE my cats, you know.
Kathleen: One thing I found interesting was that when the zoos, as they call themselves, were talking about their love of animals, I wondered whether I might share some of their characteristics.
Amber: Interesting. Like what?

Kathleen:
There's a part of me that can identify with a complete withdrawal from human contact (which, actually, none of them were even discussing), and just living with non-human companions and falling in love.
I don't know about penetrative sex, though. But I think I can see my way around a lot of sexual/sensual interactions with non-humans.
Amber: They did talk about how they appreciated the simplicity of an animal existence being free of cultural, verbal interactions.
I think I regard my cats as my furry babies. Which is weird too, I 'spose.
Kathleen: I think I have maternal feelings towards my cats too, which is sort of tricky.
Amber: Consent: big topic!
Kathleen: Indeed. It's obviously a slippery slope, and since I just “came out” on Google IM…
Some of the questions around "simplicity" bothered me, but they bother me in the same way that many questions around consent and non-humans do, not just sexually-based issues.
Actually, one thing that I found an effective counter-point to the media's portrayal of these folks as monstrous was when they showed the vets drugging that poor stallion and castrating him. Talk about issues of sexual consent!!
Amber: Right on. That was fucked up. They picked up the stallion in question and...does this count as a spoiler?
Kathleen: If you mean did it spoil my appetite, then yes.

Amber:
All I gotta say is "pony". Highlight of the film.
Kathleen: I can imagine being in love with a cat (or an otter, etc...), but not feeling sexual desire towards that individual.
Amber: Yer referring to the animal as an individual, as I suppose they may be in the way that it is a singular being. But usually we refer to humans that way.
Kathleen: Yes, I tend to refer to animals as people.
…Although I have had what could be understood as a sexual experience one of the only times I interacted with a horse... I think a lot of girls have experienced this, am I right? Which also brings up issues of back in the day, forcing women to ride side-saddle, issues of sexual restrictions…
Amber: I think there is a difference between riding a horse, or a swing or a washing machine and getting off on it and then associating that being/object/person with sexuality. But I'm not sure it's a romantic or consensual one.
Kathleen: No, it's interesting, for me it was as if the horse was a vibrator. There was no deep connection. But for some girls, I think the riding and other activities form a part of a super emotionally charged relationship.

Amber:
I think that people definitely have deep connections to animals (myself included). On the subject of girls/women, there weren't too many in the film- none at all who were "zoo".
Kathleen: Another thing zoo ignored or glossed over was other forms of bestial intercourse, like when someone sticks their dick in an animal. I tend to have a much more negative reaction to this, even though with humans I would never argue that rape is limited to forcing a penis inside something.
Amber: Good point. The whole film estheticized the zoophilia and veered as much as possible away from anything "bestial" though you do see some interspecies lovin' in a very peripheral way.
I think that the filmmakers didn't move beyond their original intention of presenting a group's story in a non-sensationalized way. I feel the film lost momentum and had some awkward moments trying to reconcile that.
Kathleen: Yes, I feel like the director narrowed his focus to the extreme and also used a lyrical rather than a straightforward aesthetic and narration style, which is a controversial choice to make when you're diving into hitherto unexplored and taboo territory.
In terms of multiplicity, there were also some interesting choices made in terms of casting and depictions of real people and events. Some people were played by actors but you could hear their real voices, some played themselves, and some were entirely fictional. A strange layering and distancing from the original events was the result, in my opinion.
Amber: It's funny that some reviews have compared the approach of the filmmakers to that of Errol Morris who is so good a spinning a tight yarn as well as using different editing strategies to reveal the different dimensions and truths of a story. This lacked dimension.
I think the film was beautiful to look at but could have used a more rigorous structure, even though there were not many opportunities for "talking head" interviews, as many of the zoos in question didn't want to be filmed.
Kathleen: The one talking head interview that was present only added to the confusion!
Amber: Holy fuck yeah.
I was like "dead little boy", white background, man on a stool...what?!
Kathleen: I think it was supposed to add gravitas, reminding us of the price one zoo paid... for his passion!
All style and very little substance. The "pony" moment, although hilarious, added nothing.
Amber: It added to my personal glee.

What did Rick say again?
Kathleen: Rick said it was a hilarious slapstick comedy, that the dolphins made him laugh, and about the guy on the stool... I don't remember.
Oh gawd and the music! I would argue that the music really worked against the filmmaker's desire to make a non-judgmental and "objective" piece. The music was all and foreboding and relentless and sinister.
Amber: I think it was supposed to be "Glass-ian".
The music.
Kathleen: Well i kept getting scissorhands flashbacks.
Amber: Lady friend, I gotta go back to work now.

an introduction

hello friends, it's Neetzie here or aka giddy. Just thought i'd say hi. I 've been working on Lickety Split since it's birth back (whenever that was) as a contributor, photographer and general slave. Amber really is the master and when she says 'get naked', well then i get naked, and as you could imagine, erotica is born. I remember when the idea for LS first came about. Amber and I were working for a christian organization and we would talk about smut and art (and who we were cruise-ing) all day long, so eventually these ideas (mostly amber's), became the zine. I remember that we would sneak photocopies of our erotic art work in between organizing a food bank and doing interpretive dances to hymns for money. We felt really dirty. Then an article in the Link came out about LS with amber's name all over it and some photos of me topless and the cat was out of the bag. For some reason, our boss the priest, didn't fire us. Thank god for open minded feminists. I do imagine though that she said a prayer or two. In fact, i think fans should take a moment to thank Jesus for his influence of this fine zine.
But really, one day Amber came to the office and said to me, "Anita, I can make you famous.", and I said "How?", and she said, "Get naked." So i did and we're both still waiting for fortune.

This edition is going to be really exciting. We have a few projects that we need participation for so keep your ear to the ground and we'll get back to you for details. One hint though, it involves you being able to realize your fantasies about wearing panties and a mustache all at the same time!
xoxo friends, keep it hot and safe.

As Quebec gears up for the visit of George W. Bush, Stephen Harper and
Felipe Calderon, slashes sex ed programs across the province, and encourages
middle class gay assimilation while marginalizing queer youth, Montreal's
Gay Pride will kick off.
But Pride doesn't have to mean rainbow Molson flags and complicity with the
Village's pink capitalist-led persecution of sex workers, homeless people,
and all the others of us who haven't been Queer-Eyed.
Come help reclaim the parade's roots as a political protest by marching in
the PERVERS/CITE PINK BLOC!!!!

DRESS-CODE: PERVERSION CHIC

here are some ideas…
~Homo cops – ticketing the gaygeoisie
~Extra queerestrials - ALIENated by the pink dollar
~Anticapitalist army of lovers - cruising to recruit
~And of course, classic pink & black/ the glamourous skid look

The PERVERS/CITE organizing collective
opposes racism, sexism, capitalism,
transphobia, body fascism, colonialism,
classism and all other forms of
oppression and marginalization.
We aim to oppose the queer community's
total assimilation into mainstream kkkanadian culture,
as well as to foreground both a local history of queer radicalism
and social issues faced by queers today
that are consistently glossed over by the gaystream media
in favour of double-groom cakes and shopping holidays.

I, Smut Master.

Hello,

My name is Amber and I'm the founder/wrangler/curator/editor of this foine schmut zine and I'm damn loud and proud about it!

We are entering a new era of sexiness, based in community, unity and plurality. Lickety Split is expanding: we have a new PR team, a new print run (1000 copies this October!), fresh new ideas from seasoned and apprentice Lickety smutsters as well as a load of upcoming events which we will be sneak pre-viewing here veryvery soon! Fits in well with our issue #5 Multiples theme eh?

A note about the origins of Lickety Split smut zine:
"The first issue was printed in January 2004 but we were talkin' shit and frontin' about LS long before that! Since then it's been an annual journal, usually 80 pages in length, B/W, 5.5 by 7.5 inches with silkscreened covers designed by the arteest Sherwin Tjia. Lickety Split's name was thought up by the filthy brains belonging to the world's sexiest rock duo Holy Moly; check out their interview in issue #1. The cinematic shape of the zine was suggested by local filmmaker Mike Rollo. In all reality, Amber Goodwyn is only responsible for asking people for stuff and bossing people around."

...and if you're not familiar with the quote we love to pimp, check it out:
"If you don't like what you see out your window, the most subversive thing you can do is make your own vision. If criticizing sex is so important, then where are our role models? Who do you think is going to make erotic expression meaningful
to you if not yourself? " - Susie Bright, Full Exposure

STARTING SLOW

See left: That’s me, aka Sean P., the guy you may not know as the wizard-at-odds behind the Lickety Split site.

Even if I’m not yet an object of idolatry or ire in your universe of one, I’ll get my fifteen minutes because from now on, we’ll be seeing each other regularly. Well, really, you’ll be reading my words only occasionally. And I don’t really expect a heavy commitment but some fan/hatemail every now and again would be nice. You know, just to be sure that I’m stirring the shit—good, bad and whatever.

Some background: I’m a twenty-three year old male without a sense of humor. I hate taking walks and having picnics. Generally, I’m no fun to be around. On the other hand, the things I’m into include explicit art with a political bent, long conversations laced with criticism and getting intimate to the ear-destroying strains of Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music played at full volume.

If any of the above seems off-putting, you needn’t worry. I’m reinventing myself just for you! (To be honest, I’ll never change. I’m leading you on. It’s a thing I do. Sorry.) So look forward to breathlessly optimistic, heartburstingly beautiful bloggage of wide-eyed wonderment on a whole range of super-smart smutty stuff.

Signed,
ME

New Comedy about Porn and Feminism!

Sarah Schenck, a feminist filmmaker from Brooklyn, has just released her first feature film, Slippery Slope. It's a comedy about feminist who gets a job directing porn flicks in order to fund her own antiporn documentary. Concept!

When I first read the blurb, I was skeptical of the direction this film seemed to be headed in. It sounded... overly simplistic. However, the ladies over at Feministing did a very interesting and in-depth interview with the director, and now I'm really keen on seeing this when it comes my way! You gotta love a film that injects a little humor into the porn industry.

Read the interview at http://feministing.com/archives/007394.html#more

New Kid on the Block!

Hey there, Lickety Split community!

I'm the new Associate Curator of this fine zine, so why don't I introduce myself?

My name's Kathleen and I'm originally from the chilly plains of Lennoxville. I'm just finishing a degree in Women's Studies at Concordia, with a double minor in Sexuality Studies and Fine Arts.

I have a few jobs, but the main one is editing and co-writing a 300-page behemoth of a sex ed training manual for 14/15 year-old peer educators. And if there's one thing making this manual in my 20s has taught me, it's that EVERYONE can use more sex ed! So expect to see a lot of updates on this topic...

Arts-wise, a lot of my work is sexually explicit. In 2005 I made a male pin-up calendar, and more recently I showed an audio piece on male masturbation and two video shorts about my childhood sexual hijinx at the Daughters of Joy soirée (now on tour!). Right now I'm working on an illustrated book about open relationships.

So that's enough of that! I hope to keep you randy with rants, reviews and other rare specimens.

Cheers,
Kathleen

PS -- I'm 12 in that photo, by the way. Better sense of style now, I hope.
